Street Fighter 6 Tier List Rankings – The Best Characters of the Early Meta

In this tier list, we’re breaking down the best Street Fighter 6 characters of the early meta post-release.

Note that with all of our tier lists, we want to stress that the player ALWAYS comes before the character. Your skillset, playstyle, and drive to improve with a character are of the most importance.

Additionally, SF6 has proven to be very balanced on launch with nearly every character having advocates, drawing complaints, and improving with each day.

We’ve been ravenously playing and consuming the early tournaments/gameplay of top FGC players to define this first edition of our list but it is far from being law of course. Expect our rankings to change quickly!

Here are our rankings for the best characters in Street Fighter 6:

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
S Luke, Ken, JP, Juri, Cammy
S- Blanka, Guile, Marisa, Chun-Li, Dee Jay
A Rashid, Manon, Dhalsim, E.Honda
B Kimberly, Ryu, Jamie
C Lily, Zangief

We also have a handy infographic version below:

S-tier Characters (Top Tier) – Reliably Among the Best

ken sf6 profile

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
S Luke, Juri, Ken

In S-tier, we have characters that have strong matchup spreads, some of the most broken kits overall kits, and have a lot more room to scale as the game ages.

S-tier Character Notes

Luke

Luke has been positioned as the face of SF6 and is the Ryu for a new generation. He’s easy to pull off, effective at any range, and was even #1 on Tokido, Mago, and Gachikun’s first-tier list. Since then, he’s only gotten better and better and appears to be a mainstay at the upper echelons of the SF6 meta. MenaRD, the winner of CEO co-mains Luke alongside his Blanka.

Ken

Ken was very highly rated since the beta and has still been incredibly hot throughout SF6’s official release existence. He’s one of the best aggressive characters in the game and is currently one of Daigo’s mains – despite being incredibly popular and simple to play, he is still very strong so he’s likely overtuned.

JP

JP is the new villain of Street Fighter 6 and he’s appropriately an oppressive zoner who will cause many to break their sticks in frustration. He was very popular in the top 100 of EVO and Kakeru, his best representative, took the 400k 1st place prize at Gamers8’s invitational.

Juri

Juri is one of the best offensive threats and the top slow fireball character. She’s fallen out of top 3 since she can struggle against characters like Ken and Blanka, but she’s still very good.

Cammy

Cammy is used to being a dominant choice in SF and although she isn’t as broken in SF6, she’s proven to be very strong. She has been a popular choice in the competitive scene with pros like Punk/Pink and her playbase has bypassed the original community perception that her damage output is too low.

S-Minus Tier Notes (Lower Top Tier)

marisa sf 6 profile

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
S- Blanka, Guile, Blanka,Marisa, Chun-Li Dee Jay

We created this new category because Luke, Juri, and Ken set themselves a cut above the rest.

Blanka

We said in our previous notes for Blanka that you shouldn’t be surprised to see him jump up the ranks next time you read this. Well, MenaRD just the Grand Finals of CEO 2023 (he played Luke as well during the rest of the tourney but only played Blanka during GFs) using the Brazilian menace. Some argue that Blanka is currently a knowledge check, but we think he has enough legitimate tools to justify his placing.

Guile

Guile WAS the best zoner in SF6 but now he’s competing with JP for that top spot. With his ease of execution and gameplan along with being one of the best defensive characters, Guile is a great choice if you want to climb as a zoner but don’t want to be as hated as JP mains or work as hard as Dhalsim.

Marisa

Marisa has been a literal wrecking ball and is much stronger than many thought based on her first reveal. She’s a solid choice right now due to her ease of use and armor but will likely fall off in strength as players become more experienced due to her simpler game plan. That being said, she is likely deserving of a higher tier since we’ve seen Big Bird make her look insane at the top levels (check out Kumite) but we need more data.

Chun Li

As always, Chun Li offers one of the highest ceilings in terms of mechanical execution so she’s always a top-level threat. However, in SF6’s early meta, it remains to be seen if the work she requires is worth it.

Chun-li had her charge move, Kikoken, impacted by the Battle Change List (24.07.2023). Pro player Haitani recently went on a 72 win streak in ranked with Modern Chun-li, so she was obviously very strong already, but perhaps these changes will give Modern Control characters like her a few, slight situational improvements.

Dee Jay

With incredible mobility, feints, one of the fastest Drive Rushes, and just an overall awesome kit, Dee Jay is deservedly S-tier. He’s been highly rated by many top players but has a very high execution demand to be played at the very highest levels. If you’ve been enjoying playing him, keep at it because he looks like a safe bet for time investment.

A-tier Characters (High Tier) – Really Good, but Slightly Worse

e honda fighter logo

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
A Rashid, Marisa, Manon, Dhalsim, E.Honda

The characters in A-tier are powerful but below S because they’re either harder to pull off, are slightly weaker than a similar character, or are more reliant on gimmicks.

A-tier Character Notes

Rashid

Rashid’s unrivaled selection of movement options and projectile variations give him incredible versatility. Players are able to have Rashid adapt to themselves and express their own individual playstyle. His top-tier offensive pressure, approach mix-ups, and defensive options are really only held back by his slightly below-average damage output.

The majority of his combos are just not as hard-hitting as those characters placed above him in our tier list, and will often demand more Drive and Super gauge resources to match S tier damage.

Manon

Manon has been a sudden contender with top players like Sticky Fingers picking her up. As a grappler with potent footsie capabilities, Manon offers reliability, versatility, and best of all, one of the best resource systems on the roster. Prepare for a mountain of medals and la la la deaths.

E. Honda

Wow, E. Honda came flying out of the gates as an early strong pick but as time goes on, he has become a bit more predictable alongside counterplay the community has developed. He’s still a terror at lower ranks but has fallen out of favor at the highest levels.

Dhalsim

Dhalsim is one of those characters that usually scales well as an SF title ages and we can likely expect the same for SF6. While JP and Guile have been in the spotlight for zoners, be ready for his inevitable rise due to the inherent nature of him being the stretchy yoga man.

B-tier Characters (Mid Tier) – Have Some Stuff, but Not Broken

ryu sf6 profile

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
B Kimberly, Ryu, Jamie

In this B-tier batch, we have characters who definitely have some good stuff and strong representative players out there, but are typically worse than other characters that are similar to them.

Character Notes

Kimberly

Kimberly was the best rushdown character during the beta, having an insane amount of mobility and shmix. After her pre-release nerfs, she has fallen out of favor compared to Juri and Cammy. Although she has one of the best punish games, her neutral is a bit gimmicky.

Ryu

Ryu is just solid, a fine choice for those looking for a well-rounded character with a great projectile game. He can definitely shine in good hands but doesn’t really have anything too oppressive to push him into the higher echelons.

Jamie

Jamie is one of the coolest characters in the game when it comes to style and swag, but the execution of his kit is much worse than its concept. Especially when you compare to Manon’s medal system that scales between rounds, Jamie has to work super hard to come online. We’ll see how he looks after he’s given more time though as a new character.

C-tier Characters (Low Tier) – The Most Honest and Hardworking

lily fighter logo

Tier Street Fighter 6 Tier List
C Lily, Zangief

Lastly, we have the C-tier characters. Don’t get us wrong, just because they’re lowest on the list doesn’t mean they can’t be deadly in the right hands. However, they’ll typically need to work harder than the other characters on the roster to do so.

Character Notes

Lily

The new member of the Thunderfoot tribe does have some advocates in the scene but she’s been widely ranked as underpowered when it comes to her kit’s capabilities and damage output but she is easy to pilot.

Zangief

In a zoner-centric meta and with the addition of Manon, it’s been tough to justify playing Zangief outside of being loyal to your character like Snake Eyez or destroying lower ranks with Modern. He’s still one of those characters that’s super satisfying to win with but some matchups will be torture for you.

As of Battle Change List (24.07.2023), it turns out Zangief being the only character to have an extra long Burn Out recovery time was supposedly not intentional and now he recovers at the speed as every other character.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Class Tier List

Welcome to our tier list of the best Baldur’s Gate 3 classes.

We’ve ranked all twelve of the main classes based on our team’s experiences playing through BG3’s end game (max level 12) on the Tactician difficulty.

The game just released so we will likely be making changes often, so be sure to check back!

Our Subclass Tier List will be out very soon as well so keep an eye out.

Quick Disclaimers
  • Play the way you want! In BG3, you can respec anything besides race, so there’s nothing stopping you from trying things out until you find what’s ideal for your playstyle.
  • Party composition will always trump the power of any individual class. If your party members collectively synergize with their strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses, you’ll be pretty solid!
  • This tier list does not factor in multiclass builds but we will create a separate Multiclass tier list soon.

Here are our rankings for the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 (click on a class to jump to their section):

Tier Classes
S Bard, Paladin, Barbarian
A Wizard, Sorcerer, Monk, Ranger, Druid
B Cleric, Fighter, Warlock
C Rogue

If you prefer a more visual representation, check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 Tier List infographic:

Best Classes Baldur's Gate 3 tier list update

Best Baldur’s Gate 3 Classes Commentary

Your journeys in Baldur’s Gate 3 will have you facing a wide range of situations. Some that you will be ready for, and others that you would never see coming (without using a guide or something of course).

In addition to the wide range of situations you’ll face, you’ll usually have many ways to solve that problem. Using the classic example of a locked door, a Fighter or Barbarian might break it down, a Rogue may pick the lock silently, and a Bard may simply convince the guard to open it for them.

Due to this wide range of playstyles and approaches to problem-solving, our criteria for this tier list can be summarized as three main categories:

  • Combat
    • Includes a class’s ability to kill enemies, protect or empower allies, and influence the battlefield with utility and manipulation.
  • Social
    • Includes a class’s ability to come out of social interactions with positive/intended outcomes, whether through direct dialogue or manipulating a conversation through other means like magic.
  • Exploration
    • Includes a class’s usefulness in areas such as scouting, sneaking, gathering information for the party, navigating a dungeon’s traps, and much more.

Major Note: The Impact of BG3 Short/Long Rests

Some of our class rankings will be much different than the perceived best classes of D&D 5th Edition due to the ease of being able to rest often in Baldur’s Gate 3.

For example, in 5E, the Cleric is an S-tier class because it can be difficult to find time to safely rest in dangerous areas of a campaign (this depends on your dungeon master of course). Having no healer at all can be much riskier as you’ll be lacking ways to reliably sustain your party’s health during and between battles.

However, in Baldur’s Gate 3, even at the highest character levels and on Tactician (the hardest difficulty), you get enough Camp Resources to rest at will (as long as you’re collecting supplies along the way). In addition, there are areas where resting is blocked, but you can easily backtrack a bit to find somewhere where you can rest.

This makes no healer party builds much more viable (in fact, one of our writers beat Tactician mode with a Wizard, Barbarian, Monk, and Fighter build.

In many situations, you’re better off focusing on killing the enemies as fast as you can with high damage and mobility builds. Basically taking the “best defense is a good offense” mentality.

Likewise, since you can Long Rest easily, this also diminishes the value of classes like the Warlock and Fighter whose strengths traditionally include replenishing their resources with Short Rests.

S-tier Classes

Bard

bard icon

If the party is an orchestra, the Bard is the conductor, being able to facilitate and dictate nearly any situation.

The only time they can really struggle is when they’re alone, and the Bard usually has the means to escape when isolated.

Although they are a “jack-of-all-trades class”, they are honestly still among the best classes when it comes to social impact and supporting their allies.

For example, Bardic Inspiration, which allows the Bard to bestow improved rolls upon allies, can turn the tides for attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.

This allows the Bard to pull victory from the clutches of defeat or ensure a plan goes smoothly in ways that most other classes can’t.

What usually turns off players from having a Bard in their party is the outdated stereotype that they’re forced into a more goofy/jokester flavor, it’s hardly ever due to them lacking value to a party.

Paladin

paladin icon

When you first think of a Paladin class in any game, you’d probably think of a holy knight that can be found on the frontlines to tank and support their team with some utility, whether that’s healing or shielding.

Well, the Paladin of 5E and BG3 can not only do all of that, but they’re surprisingly one of the best classes when it comes to potential single-target damage due to their Holy Smite ability.

As a CHR-based caster, the Paladin not only shines in battle but also in social situations, offering a great option to be the face of your party since they can talk the talk but also be ready on the frontlines if discussions go badly.

Since most of their stats will go into STR/CHR/CON, a Paladin can be slow to a fight (with lower DEX) and won’t provide as much exploration value as other classes.

While they have strong single-target damage, they also lack AoE compared to other classes. However, their pros greatly outweigh their cons.

Barbarian

barbarian icon

Ah, the Barbarian – although it is an incredibly linear and predictable class by nature, its Rage ability can singlehandedly carry combat encounters for your party as a frontline and damage dealer.

It is the “fight now, talk later” class, making it a good choice if you don’t care about talking your way out of a situation or just want to break down that door.

Something that makes the Barbarian particularly good in BG3 is that STR-related abilities like Jumping and Shoving are particularly strong. This lets them get multiple kills per round reliably and gives them additional utility when exploring.

A-tier Classes

Wizard

wizard icon

With their ability to permanently learn any spell by copying a scroll into their spellbook, the Wizards greatly embody this late-game scaling as they get to access the largest spell list of the spellcasters.

If your party knows what’s coming and has time to set up, the Wizards can effectively be the “Batman with prep time” since they can concoct the exact list of spells needed for that upcoming encounter/adventure.

For players who want to constantly try new ways of playing, the Wizard is also an attractive option they have the most subclass choices in BG3.

As far as downsides go, the Wizard doesn’t have as much raw power potential in comparison to the Sorcerer. They also need to maximize their INT stat, making them worse when it comes to exploration/social encounters in comparison to WIS/CHR casters.

However, since no other class maximizes INT, Wizards do offer some unique upsides when it comes to INT-related rolls when they do arise.

Sorcerer

sorcerer icon

While the Wizard may have access to more spells for more situations, Sorcerers provide more impact for the spells that they do cast.

This is because of the Sorcerer’s unique Metamagic ability, which allows them to cast upgraded versions of their spells by spending their sorcery point resources.

These upgrades include being able to cast the same spell onto two different targets (Twinned Spell), being able to cast a spell as a Bonus Action which gives you more freedom in your action economy (Quickened Spell), or even cast verbal spells without speaking (Subtle Spell) which basically counters Silence.

As a result, Sorcerers can really have powerhouse moments that other classes cannot.

So if you have a party that already has a good amount of versatility from other members, you may want to consider the Sorcerer for that raw power tradeoff.

In addition, since Sorcerers are CHR casters, they are adept in navigating social situations compared to their anti-social Wizard friends.

Monk

monk icon

Being able to quickly traverse the battlefield and jump from enemy to enemy (often literally) is incredibly valuable in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Even in 5th Edition where the Monk was usually considered the weakest class, their insane mobility was something everyone agreed upon and they are still best in class for BG3.

Although they weren’t available in Early Access, we knew that the class was likely to receive some buffs like the Ranger did. Well, it happened and now they are a mobile monster that also has impressive damage output.

They can become super tanky with very high ACs, get multiple kills per round, dodge enemy spells, and more. Honestly, they have an argument for S-tier, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.

Ranger

ranger icon

If you find yourself in between choosing a Druid or a Fighter, the Ranger may be the class for you.

This is because they can excel in melee or ranged combat but also have a splash of nature/animal abilities at their disposal.

For example, you can be a potent sniper with Hunter’s Mark or add an additional member to your party with an animal companion

Similar to the Rogue, the Ranger really excels in the exploration category, making it one of the best scouts to send ahead of your party.

In particular, the revamped Beast Master is incredibly strong, offering your party a major boost in action economy and utility to the point that we have to rank them in A-tier.

Druid

druid icon

With their unique access to Wild Shape, Druids will always have an argument for being one of the most versatile classes.

Although Wild Shape is a bit more limited in BG3 than 5E (where you could transform into any beast you’ve seen before), there is still a wide range of situations that the Druid can bend themselves to on the fly.

In addition to their Wild Shape, Druid spells also offer nature and element-based utility in spades. Want to talk to animals? Talk to trees? Use a tree as a teleportation portal? The Druid can do it.

If you are in nature, they are the 4th S-tier class since they will make your party feel at home with a ton of extra exploration options that you wouldn’t have in a city environment.

That being said, although a Druid can tank, can cast spells, and so forth, they usually aren’t able to do so at the same level as the classes who have it as their primary role.

As a WIS-based caster like the Cleric, Druids can also struggle in some CHR-based social interactions, but being able to speak to animals and plants makes up for it.

B-tier Classes

Cleric

cleric icon

Having a Cleric in your party is a literal godsend due to their stabilizing presence and versatility.

Second only to the Wizard in their number of available subclasses, the Cleric truly can fit into almost any role.

They can frontline, heal, be built to deal considerable damage, offer unique strengths against undead enemies, and much more

Since they focus on the WIS stat, they won’t have the social impact that CHR classes (like Bard/Paladin) have and may need to stay behind in situations where sneaking and stealth are needed for your party (although can get around that with the Trickery Domain!).

Due to the ease of being able to rest often in BG3, healing abilities aren’t as necessary for success, so they aren’t the S-tier beasts that they are in 5th Edition.

Fighter

fighter icon

The Fighter is one of those classes that you can just slot into basically any party comp and be happy with it.

Although they won’t shine as much as others when it comes to social or exploration situations (since they max STR or DEX and CON), they live up to their namesake on the battlefield.

Need a frontliner? A long-ranged sniper? A one-on-one specialist to take out the enemy’s core threat? A Fighter can do it all, with their wide range of fighting styles.

With their Second Wind ability, Fighters are able to be self-sufficient and independent, allowing your party to direct your healing resources elsewhere.

And last but not least, Fighters have their signature move, the Action Surge which allows them to take an additional action and create a burst turn swing.

In general though, the Fighter falls off in comparison to the Barbarian and Monk in terms of damage output, so we have the class in B-tier.

However, like the Rogue, they are one of the best candidates for two levels of a multiclass dip.

Warlock

warlock icon

Next, we have Warlock, the sort of weird oddball cousin of the spellcasting classes.

In exchange for not having as many spells at their disposal in comparison to the Wizard and not having the raw power of the Sorcerer’s Metamagic, the Warlock offers the advantage of being able to get their spellslots back during a Short Rest.

Unfortunately, as we mentioned earlier in the article, it is very easy to Long Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3, so this sort of dampens the value of this perk a bit in comparison to D&D where it can often be dangerous to do so.

In addition, Warlocks also get access to their bread-and-butter cantrip, Eldritch Blast, which is one of the most powerful cantrips in the game (and often one a Warlock builds around with their Eldritch Invocations). Other casters will be much less impactful during their cantrip turns.

If you take the Warlock Fiend subclass with the Pact of the Blade, that lets you build up temporary hit points and have a sweet melee playstyle.

Lastly, Warlocks are another option for the face of your party as a CHR caster, but keep in mind that you may be pushed into certain choices due to the influence of their Patron.

So if you don’t like planning around your next Long Rest and want to keep the party rolling as much as possible, the Warlock may be for you. However, if you like to plan meticulously and can’t wait for that next Long Rest, you may want to go with another option as you’ll be ignoring one of the Warlock’s main upsides.

C-tier Classes

Rogue

rogue icon

Earlier, we mentioned that the Barbarian’s playstyle can sometimes conflict with the strengths of other classes.

The Rogue finds itself on the other end of the Barbarian’s spectrum YOLO spectrum, hoping to solve situations without their enemies ever knowing they were there.

They are among the best classes for exploration, with the ability to pick locks, disarm traps, scout enemies unnoticed, pickpocket some loot here and there, and so on.

In combat, Rogues can really shine in the early rounds of a fight, especially if your party had the surprise factor to get in some juicy sneak attacks.

However, if you find yourself in a fight where you didn’t have initiative (such as a trap in an enclosed space) or a long battle of attrition the Rogue will be serviceable but definitely not as good as other classes.

So if you have a Rogue in your party, make sure to really lean into choosing the time and place of your fights to maximize their skillset.

Overall, we have Rogue in B-tier because many of its strengths are done better by other DEX classes and most of its value comes from dipping two levels as a multiclass rather than a main build-around.

Closing Thoughts

Thanks for checking out our early list of the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. Remember that a lot can change from Early Access and although Larian built a lot of BG3 from 5E, there are a ton of differences between playing a video game and having a live table run by a dungeon master.

Ultimately, if you want to play with four Barbarians, four Bards, or four Monks, go for it! You’ll honestly be able to beat the game with nearly any comp (maybe not on the Tactician difficulty) as long as you play to the comp’s strengths. GLHF!

Street Fighter 6 DLC Characters List

Street Fighter 6 DLC characters will be annually added to the starting cast of 18.

The first Fighter Pass was revealed in a video from the developers.

It confirmed that Rashid, Ed, Akuma, and A.K.I. (an SF6 newcomer), would be joining the cast in 2023 and 2024.

So far, DLC characters are confirmed to be included in the World Tour Mode as well to let us learn more about their lore.

Here’s everything you need to know about them!

After a new DLC character has been released and we have a few weeks to study, test, and observe them in competitive play, they will be ranked on our Best Street Fighter 6 characters tier list.

Rashid – Summer 2023

sf6 rashid reveal

  • First Street Fighter Appearance
    • Street Fighter 5
  • TLDR Lore
    • The eldest son of a Middle Eastern aristocrat who is traveling the world searching for a lost friend. Despite his ability to control the wind, he is very laid back and is a tech aficionado
  • Playstyle
    • Rashid is a mobile, unpredictable, and most of all, stylish fighter. He can literally mix up opponents in a tornado, has a signature curving projectile that can anti-air, and can close gaps easily with burst options.

Rashid has been released! Learn more about him in our Rashid breakdown.

A.K.I. – Fall 2023

aki sf6 reveal

  • First Street Fighter Appearance
    • Will be Street Fighter 6
  • TLDR Lore
    • Currently unknown since SF6 will be her first game, but with an acronym name, she may be a cyborg/android or some other “programmed” character. She may be F.A.N.G.’s protege.
  • Playstyle
    • A.K.I’s reveal art emphasizes her claws which we can use as a clue to her playstyle. She could be a potential new choice for Vega fans (if he doesn’t get his own roster slot) and will likely be a rush-down character. But who knows? Maybe Capcom could spice things up and make her a zoner/grappler. If she truly is F.A.N.G.’s protege, she will likely have a poison-related kit.

On the last night of EVO 2023, A.K.I.’s first teaser was revealed:

Ed – Winter 2024

sf6 ed reveal

  • First Street Fighter Appearance
    • Street Fighter 5 (playable), Street Fighter 4 (non-playable)
  • TLDR Lore
    • Balrog’s apprentice and M. Bison’s intended physical vessel, Ed certainly has a unique backstory. You’ll probably want to dive into a recap video for this guy.
  • Playstyle
    • A boxer with psychic capabilities – Ed provides a unique experience since he uses button taps and combinations to execute his specials. He’ll be a bit like Marisa but with more mobility and a bit of projectile play.

Akuma – Spring 2024

sf6 akuma reveal

  • First Street Fighter Appearance
    • Super Street Fighter II Turbo
  • TLDR Lore
    • One of the signature villains of the Street Fighter franchise, Akuma is the younger brother (and killer) of Gouken, the master of Ryu and Ken.
  • Playstyle
    • As Gouken’s brother, Akuma naturally has some similarities to the movesets of Ryu and Ken. However, due to his indulgence in evil arts, Akuma typically has insane offensive power in exchange for lower health, making him a glass cannon.

How to Unlock Street Fighter 6 DLC Characters

Street Fighter 6 will be releasing new DLC characters every year for the foreseeable future. With the incredibly successful launch it had, we can probably assume that it will continue for a good while!

To get a Fighter Pass that includes all DLC fighters from a year, it is $29.99 as a standalone purchase.

If you purchased the Deluxe or Ultimate edition of SF6, your copy already includes Fighter Pass 1 (Rashid, A.K.I, Ed, and Akuma).

The price of an individual fighter (a la carte) hasn’t been revealed yet, but you can assume that it will definitely be an option to do so.

Lastly, if you aren’t sure if you want a fighter, SF6 will offer Rental Fighter pass that allows you to sample and try them before buying.

Welcome to our Teamfight Tactics Tier List for Patch 13.15

Hey everyone, welcome back to our weekly champ strength analysis.

Similar to our LoL tier list, our TFT tier list is curated in collaboration with top-level players, such as Ace of Spades. This list is optimized to help you climb.

The next patch of Set 9 is here, and while the patch is quite hefty, if you’ve been keeping up with the meta, things won’t be too different. There are some notable movements, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

Looking for info on the upcoming Set 9? Check out our all-in-one Teamfight Tactics Set 9 reveal article that covers all champions, synergies, and more!

General Champion Commentary

In this section, I’ll be covering the major movements in the tier list that you should keep an eye on. I won’t go into detail over every little movement, just the major changes.

Samira – S Tier

Samira has moved up into S tier due to the change to her cast speed. Samira is incredibly strong early game, and she can be used as a reroll carry as well. While she may not carry to the end game, she’s incredibly strong to top 4 lobbies with. Even without 3 starring her, she’s a good AD item holder.

Swain – S Tier

Swain was already an S tier unit in our previous patch ranking, but he got a small buff  this patch as well. This just makes him one of the strongest early game units to pick up. If you go Caitlyn Legend and hit Samira 2 and Swain 2, that’s basically a free 5 win streak to Krugs.

TFT Tier List Methodology

Our goal is to deliver the most correct tier list we can. When data becomes available, we will add that to our decision making as well.

To ensure accuracy, we work with experts with multiple Queen accounts like Ace of Spades and Saintvicious to scientifically test hypotheses and come to logical conclusions. We will update these as frequently as possible until the meta settles.

We justify our decision making in the notes, so be sure to read that and weigh in. We welcome feedback to figure out what we missed!

Units are valued in the following ways:

  • S-tier = Super powerful and contested champs that everyone wants and forms comps around.
  • A-tier = Champs that fit very well into powerful comps in the meta.
  • B-tier = Champs that are situational but still fit into good comps.
  • Not on the list = Champs that are rarely contested and have better alternatives for their comps or just don’t fit into a strong comp at all.

In the current state of the game, items are a big component of champ strength and champs that work well with them are high value. Right now, we’ll be organizing by unit cost.

This allows you to understand when a champion is valuable and when they start to fall off. This also allows you to understand how you should value your economy with the rolls you are getting. If this doesn’t work out or is too complex, then we will iterate in the future.

We evaluate a specific unit at a specific point in the game assuming it has a reasonable rank for that point and it’s in a comp that works for it.

If a unit usually carries and has good items, it is evaluated in that context since items are so integral to the game.

Please remember that TFT is highly situational so ALL units can be used. Explore and help us figure out the things we may have missed!

B-tier: Blitzcrank, Ornn, Seraphine, Shen, Malphite, Morgana, Sett

Top – Ornn

thunder splash

  • Even though Ornn received a little nerf to his passive, he is still one of the strongest Baron laners
  • He benefits from the new rune, Overgrowth, by stacking up his max HP to the point of being almost unkillable late game.
  • Good luck finding a counter this patch.

Jungle – Kayn

kayn original splash

  • Kayn was already the strongest Jungler in the previous patch and the new First Strike rune grants him a big advantage for snowballing since he deals more damage and gains more/extra gold to buy his core items faster.

Mid – Zed

  • Zed’s two core items, Youmuu’s Ghostblade and Serpent’s Fang, got buffed so he has more attack damage and more armor penetration.
  • These item buffs make him a top roamer and snowballing champion with a strong early game. Also, because of the massive Hullbreaker nerfs, it’s much easier for Zed to kill enemies in the sidelanes if he ganks during mid-/late game.

Bottom – Ezreal

  • Ezreal gained more attack damage, attack speed, and a damage buff on his main ability, Mystic Shot, which improves his early game.
  • Even though his laning phase is not the best, he can now poke his enemies down better and get a lead.
  • Once Ezreal makes it to the late game, he is a monster since he also has a 10 second reduction to his ult CD.

Support – Soraka

  • Soraka’s new rework allows he to spam Astral Infusion without sacrificing her own health, making her a god pick this patch.

Methodology TLDR:

  • Our tier list is made according to what is being played in high elo but is meant to be helpful for all players. The lower your skill level, the easier skill level of champion you should consider.
  • We will only have one tier list for now since Wild Rift is a relatively new and there aren’t a lot of statistics about what is going on in lower brackets of the ladder.
  • Furthermore, for each role, we will have a recommended champion that should get you results in a short period of time based on the current meta.
  • Simple champions have a lower skill floor, allowing them to be picked up easily.
  • If a champion has a higher skill floor (harder to play), it will take more time to learn and you will have to spend some time playing them in normal games, before you can be confident to step into a ranked game.
    • However in the long run, a harder champion may have a higher ceiling in terms of their mechanics and outplay potential.
  • Note that even if your favorite or main champion isn’t meta, it doesn’t mean that you can’t climb with them. Comfort goes a long way in playing well.

Come back every patch to check out our tier list that will be updated according to the new buffs and nerfs. If you have any comments, questions, or feedback leave it below. Good luck climbing and see you soon Summoner!

Note that the heroes are organized by difficulty for new players/beginners who haven’t tried them yet.

Orange represents a high/hard skill floor, Blue represents an average skill floor, and Green represents a low/easy skill floor.

Overwatch 2 Tier List Commentary

As always with our tier lists, we want to highlight that we believe that the player always matters more than the character you play as.

If you have an off-meta main that is working for you, by all means, no need to switch! Keep rocking it.

This list is more to understand if one of your characters is favorable in the current meta, or to help players that have run into a plataeu.

Quick Notes

Fundamental Differences from Overwatch 1

Since you’re here, there’s a good chance that you already know the core differences between Overwatch and Overwatch 2.

If not, know that there are some kit adjustments across the hero cast. Be sure to know what has changed for your hero pool before diving into ranked.

The other major change to know is that now, there are five players instead of six (sorry to all you sixth men and women out there). This means that there are now one tanks instead of two.

Although it depends on the comp and the map, in general, this means that there is a noticeable decrease in the amount of crowd control and shields in the game.

There will be less instances of just defaulting to deathball teamfights and more instances of skirmishes and duels that happen.

How tiers work

In S-tier, you’ll find the best heroes in Overwatch 2 which will be very present in almost all maps and comp combinations.

A-tier heroes are still great choices but tend to be present for fewer maps than S-tier characters in pro play. However, in some situations, A-tier characters might shine more than S-tier characters.

In B-tier, we’re continuing the trend of heroes that have lower overall presence and are even more specialized. Some heroes here are just worse versions or downgrades of heroes in a similar niche above them (such as Ashe usually being the better choice over Cassidy).

Lastly, we have the Situational batch of heroes in the C-tier section. These heroes are rarely seen in comparison to their peers and are usually pulled out for specific halves or holds on a very small pool of maps. If you’re having success with them, by all means, keeping playing them.

The Best Damage (DPS) Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Damage (DPS) Tier List
S Ashe, Tracer, Cassidy, Soldier: 76
A Hanzo, Sojourn, Symmetra, Junkrat, Mei, Reaper
B Echo, Genji, Sojourn, Widowmaker, Pharah, Sombra,  Bastion, Torbjorn
C None

Tracer has been a constant through most of Overwatch 2’s competitive life cycle. She’s definitely difficult to pilot but once you reach a certain threshold of mastery, her playmaking ability can be near unmatched.

tracer concept art tier list

Cassidy’s changes to his grenade serves to invalidate a the gameplans of many heroes, so we’re putting him back in S-tier due to his influence on the meta and because he was still on the A+ cusp when we bumped him down last time,

At lower ranks, Agent 76 will be the best choice for many players due to the ease of his execution, versatility, and auto-win ult preys on lower level players (just use it from a flank and you’ll usually get several kills due to players at these ranks lacking awareness).

The Best Tank Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List
S Junker Queen, Ramattra
A Sigma, D.Va, Reinhardt, Winston
B Doomfist, Wrecking Ball, Zarya, Orisa
C Roadhog

Since his release, Rammatra has been a dominant choice for the tank role, even despite nerfs.

Since he can do it all, he has solidified his slot as an S-tier tank due to his ability to perform well on almost any map.

ramattra profile image

Junker Queen is the other S-tier tank and is still incredibly strong with this recent round of nerfs but shes still a force to be reckoned with.

The Best Support Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Support Tier List
S Ana, Baptiste, Kiriko
A Ana, Zenyatta, Brigitte, Moira, Mercy
B Lucio
C Lifeweaver

Baptiste, Kiriko, and Ana, with lamp, Suzu, and Nade, offer a ton of playmaking that allows them to outclass the other Supports at the moment. They have high ceilings in terms of skill expression and are a welcome sight in almost any team comp for any map.

kiriko profile image

When Brigitte’s changes were first announced for Season 4, many thought she would be gigabusted S-tier and easily one the best Overwatch 2 heroes due to her new ultimate which gives her a Reinhardt-sized shield and the return of her stun. However, she was bugged on release so her new look’s debut sort of fell flat, so we’ve tentatively placed her at A for now.

Lastly, we have Lifeweaver, who is still clunky and among the worst characters in the game even after his new round of buffs. He’s definitely better but still a niche choice for most maps.

All 32 Malignant Hearts Effects Listed

In addition to the Season 1 patch notes, the 32 Malignant Hearts were revealed by the Diablo 4 dev team.

The are naturally one of the new core mechanics of the Season of the Malignant, offering a new way to customize your builds.

There are four different types of Hearts: Vicious (Orange, Offensive power), Brutal (Blue, Defensive power), Devious (Pink, Utility power), and Wrathful (Black, Super).

In this breakdown, our experts for each role will be giving their first impressions for all 32 of the Malignant Hearts.

For new Season 1 builds, head to our Diablo 4 builds site.

General

The Picana (Vicious, Offensive):

Critical Strikes electrically charge the enemy for 0.75-2.50 seconds, causing lightning to arc between them and any other charged enemies dealing 68-136 Lightning damage.

  • Seems weak overall but does have some potential to have synergies with a random Druid or Sorc Lightning passive.

The Dark Dance (Vicious, Offensive-World Tier III):

Every 5 seconds while above 60% Life, Core Skills cost 68-51 Life instead of your Primary Resource. Skills that consume Life deal 10-20% increased damage.

  • Has potential to be incredibly powerful. It enables builds to play much more greedily, especially if they are able to use barriers to protect their life. Expect to see this played in most resource-heavy classes

Tempting Fate (Vicious, Offensive-World Tier III):

You gain 40-60% Critical Strike Damage but your Non-Critical Strikes deal 20-15% less damage.

  • Very powerful generic heart. It’s good for builds that don’t have better options and rely heavily on crits.

The Lionheart (Brutal, Defensive):

You gain 10% Barrier Generation. You Heal 3-7 Life per second while you have an active Barrier.

  • Not very powerful. Most builds that make high use of Barriers don’t worry about their health, so the healing isn’t that valuable. The Barrier Generation is also pretty low.

Revenge (Brutal, Defensive-World Tier III):

10-20% of incoming damage is instead suppressed. When you use a Defensive, Subterfuge or a Macabre skill, all suppressed damage is amplified by 250% and explodes, dealing up to 1360-2040 Fire damage to Nearby enemies.

  • This is a very good Defensive choice for the 20% flat damage reduction. Its fire damage is kind of funny because it scales with the level of the mobs. Overall, it’s a very interesting item that will at least be played for the damage reduction but maybe also for its AoE damage.

Prudent Heart (Brutal, Defensive-World Tier III):

You become Immune for 2.0-4.0 seconds after you lose more than 20% Life in a single hit. This effect can only occur once every 110 seconds.

  • Very unlikely to see much play. It’s a bait item like the damage immunity Aspect if you aren’t healthy.

Determination (Devious, Utility):

Resource draining effects are 40-50% less effective. In addition, gain 3.0-8.0% increased Resource Generation.

  • Not really sure what this is doing, if it reduces the cost of skills it’s great, if not it’s very bad

Retaliation (Devious, Utility-World Tier III):

Deal 510-680 Fire damage to surrounding enemies whenever a Crowd Control effect is removed from you.

  • Another questionable one, not sure where this has a place. Most likely bad.

The Calculated (Devious, Utility-World Tier III):

After spending 150-200 of your Primary Resource, your next attack Stuns enemies hit for 2 seconds.

  • And…another one that doesn’t seem too appealing. We doubt this will see much use in any builds.

The Malignant Pact (Wrathful, Super):

Cycle through a Malignant bonus every 20 kills:

Vicious: Gain 20% Attack Speed.
Devious: Core and Basic Skills have a 15% chance to fully restore your Primary Resource.
Brutal: Every 21 seconds, gain a Barrier absorbing 85-102 damage.

  • This one is interesting – a lot of its value will most likely come from setting it to a specific roll before a boss fight.

Creeping Death (Wrathful, Super):

Your damage over time effects are increased by 30-40% for each different Crowd Control effect on the target. Unstoppable monsters and Staggered bosses instead take 110-130% increased damage from your damage over time effects.

  • Insane potential! Darkness Necro, Poison Rogue, Poison Druid, Burning Sorc, Bleed Barb all get amazing value from this Heart. It buffs up all of these builds to the next level.

The Barber (Wrathful, Super-World Tier III):

Critical Strikes and all subsequent damage within 2.0-4.0 seconds is absorbed by your target. Then, the absorbed damage erupts onto surrounding enemies. Stored damage is increased by 10% per second.

  • Sounds game breaking. If it works the way it says, you will be doing 120% bonus damage per enemy in your pull. So if you pull 10 enemies you’ll be doing 1200% damage to all of them. Every single push build will be running this if it works the way it’s worded.

Barbarian

Focused Rage (Vicious, Offensive):

After spending 100-60 Fury within 2 seconds, your next Non-Basic Skill’s Critical Strike Chance is increased by 20-30%.

  • Extremely high potential with Unbridled Rage builds. Should average out to be around 15% crit chance. It won’t work well in a build like Whirlwind that overcaps on Crit Chance, but for something like HOTA or Upheaval, it’ll do well.

Resurgent Life (Brutal, Defensive):

While below 40-60% Life, you receive 50-60% more Healing from all sources.

  • Pretty bad in all cases. There are way better defensive options, like Ignoring Pain below.

Punishing Speed (Devious, Utility):

Your Skills have a 20-30% chance to Knock Down all enemies for 1.25 seconds when that Skill’s Attack Speed is higher than 35-20%.

  • Designed for Double Swing – it makes the build better because Double Swing refunds Fury when hitting knocked-down enemies.

Ignoring Pain (Wrathful, Super-World Tier IV):

Incoming damage has a 5-15% chance of being ignored and instead Healing you for 17-68.

  • Super powerful with potent defensive properties granting 100% uptime on 15% Damage Reduction and it heals you. Expect it in most Barbarian push builds.

Druid

The Moonrage (Vicious, Offensive):

Kills have a 5% chance to summon a Wolf Companion to your side for 20-30 seconds. In addition, gain +3 to Wolves.

  • This would be interesting if Pets did meaningful damage, unfortunately, they do not. Summoning extra wolves will increase the Value of your Shepard’s Aspect but the 5% chance is too low to make this heart competitive with others.

The Agitated Winds (Brutal, Defensive):

When 8-13 Close enemies, automatically cast Cyclone Armor. This cannot occur more than once every 10-20 seconds.

  • Pushing enemies away is rarely good in Diablo 4, so this Heart may do more harm than good.

Inexorable Force (Devious, Utility):

Up to 30-50 Distant enemies are pulled toward you while you have an Ultimate Skill active.

  • A very strong heart that potentially fixes problems for a lot of builds. For example, pulling enemies can be incredibly powerful for builds like Bulwark that lack large-scale AoE.

The Unconstrained Beast (Wrathful, Super-World Tier IV):

When you are hit with a Stun, Freeze or Knock Down effect, there is a 40-60% chance to automatically activate Grizzly Rage for 3 seconds.

  • This Malignant Heart is a must-have for any build running Grizzly Rage as it will make up for a lot of the nerfs that Grizzly Rage received from the last patch.

Necromancer

The Sacrilegious (Vicious, Offensive):

Walking near a Corpse automatically activates an equipped Corpse Skill every second, dealing 40-30% reduced damage.

  • Potentially very powerful. It allows you to cast Corpse Tendrils without having it on your bar, giving you an extra Skill Slot as well as getting 100% uptime on vulnerable from it. Can also have value auto-casting Corpse Explosion to proc damage bonuses after consuming Corpses.

The Decrepit Aura (Brutal, Defensive):

When at least 5 enemies are near you, gain an aura that automatically curses surrounding enemies with Decrepify for 5-15 seconds.

  • This basically allows you to play without Decrepify on your bar, which gives you an additional skill slot. It is also really useful for speeds as you won’t have to stop to cast. Definitely worth exploring.

Frozen Terror (Devious, Utility): Lucky Hit:

Up to a 10-20% chance of inflicting Fear for 2.5 seconds. Feared enemies are Chilled for 20% every second.

  • Has decent synergy with the Unique weapon that gives you Essence when hitting a frozen enemy, but beyond that, it’s terrible.

The Great Feast (Wrathful, Super-World Tier IV):

Each Minion drains 1.0-2.0 Essence per second but deals 50-75% increased damage. With no Minions, this bonus applies to you and drains 5 Essence per second.

  • Insanely strong. Will be played in virtually all builds. Minions and Corpse Explosion, in particular, get loads of value from it because they don’t use Essence to do damage.

Rogue

Cluster Munitions (Vicious, Offensive):

Lucky Hit: You have up to a 20% chance to launch 3 Stun Grenades that deal 26-32 Physical damage and Stun enemies for 0.50 seconds.

  • This is basically the Exposure Key Passive without having to take it. Would be much stronger if they didn’t nerf Retribution from 40% (80% on 2h) to 20%.

Trickery (Brutal, Defensive):

When you use a Subterfuge Skill, leave behind an unstable Shadow Decoy Trap that Taunts enemies. The Shadow Decoy Trap will explode after 6.0 seconds dealing 680-1020 Shadow damage. Cannot occur more than once every 5 seconds.

  • Trickery has the potential to be incredibly strong for NMD pushing depending on how much health the decoy has.

The Clipshot (Devious, Utility): Lucky Hit:

Up to a 20-40% chance for your Cutthroat Skills to Slow by 40% for 3 seconds and your Marksman Skills to Knock Back enemies.

  • Might have some utility for some T100 ranged builds but overall, not very good.

The Vile Apothecary (Wrathful, Super-World Tier IV):

Your attacks have a 5-15% chance to apply all Imbuement effects at 40-50% of normal potency.

  • Absolutely insane, especially for Poison Imbue builds since Shadow Imbue buffs non-physical damage by 12%. This gives you a way to Chill through Chill Imbue without having to use Penitent Boots which synergizes very well with Creeping Death.

Sorcerer

Tal’Rasha (Vicious, Offensive):

For each unique element you deal damage with, you deal 7-12% increased damage for 3-10 seconds.

  • It’s hard to say if it’ll outclass some of the damage increases you can obtain from the General Hearts, but its potential is up there. Most Sorcerer builds have access to both Fire and Lightning through Flame Shield and Teleport, and seeing as it’s obtainable early, it’s a solid increase for most builds.

Spellbreaking (Brutal, Defensive):

After taking Elemental damage, gain 20-40% Resistance to that element for 5 seconds.

  • Honestly, Blizzard missed the mark a little here. We already skip 30-40% resistance nodes on the Paragon Board when we can, and this bonus is applied after taking damage. Defensive bonuses like this have a high usefulness late game and we’re dying in one hit anyway so this will likely turn out to have no value.

Spite (Devious, Utility):

When you are afflicted with a Crowd Control effect, there is a 20-40% chance that the same enemy and enemies around you are also afflicted with the same effect for 3 seconds.

  • As a Sorcerer, we apply a lot of CC already – in fact, we apply too much in some cases and end up forcing mobs into an Unstoppable state. This overall decreases DPS and I couldn’t imagine being hit with CC and forcing everything around me to turn Unstoppable. We could argue that it allows us to maybe drop our own CC, but ours is guaranteed and adds vulnerability, this is a % chance.

Omnipower (Wrathful, Super-World Tier IV):

Core Skills that launch a projectile consume all of your Mana. For every 45-35 extra Mana consumed, you launch an additional projectile, and the damage is increased by 3.0-5.0%.

  • This has the potential to be either pretty cool or amazing. It be used with Chain Lightning with a large mana pool, allowing us to cast 4-5 at once then with % chance to restore primary resource items and Lucky Hit, instantly refill our mana for another cast. This allows us to spam out multiple casts of Chain Lightning with one cast. The potential here is huge especially when combined with other hearts like “The Picana”, “The Dark Dance” or “Tempting Fate” a lot of synergies here for sure.

How to Play Your First TFT Match

TFT is a brand new game that’s part of a genre that isn’t even a year old. With all the hype going on it can seem like you have fallen behind the crowd but in the big scheme of things, if you start to learn now, you’re actually among the first people to start playing in its life span…

Learning a new game, let alone a new genre can be overwhelming at times since there is a lot to learn and soak in, but that’s part of the fun! In this absolute beginner’s guide, we’ll teach you the basics so you have a good idea of what’s going on in your very first game.

We’ll assume you have a basic idea of what TFT is and you’re looking to play your first match. If you’ve already played a few and want to learn more we’ll guarantee you’ll learn something new as well.

Let’s learn how to play Teamfight Tactics!

How do you win in Teamfight Tactics?

The ultimate goal of TFT is to be the last player standing in an 8-player free for all match. You spend the game accumulating resources like gold and items and making decisions to build a team of units with different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities.

If you compose your team with units that synergize, they will be empowered with buffed properties. Your team of units will fight against the teams of the other players at random during the rounds. The player whose team loses will take damage. When a player runs out of life, they are out. This may seem hard but getting top 3 counts as a win, so aim for that.

TFT banner absolute beginner

These are the very surface level basics of TFT. Let’s get started with walking through how to play a match.

The Start

Previously, TFT games would start with a carousel round where you would run to try and grab a starting item and champion. With Set 9, the opening Carousel has been changed for Region Portals.

This is a new system that allows you to vote for a special rule to be added to the game. For a more in-depth look at Region Portals, you can check out our Guide.

TFT Set 9 Region Portals

Building your First Units: The Three Minion Rounds

Round 1: Placing your unit

Now that we have your first piece and item from the carousel, we’re ready for your first battle! Don’t worry too much, the first three rounds are against bot-controlled minions that are very easy to slay.

To learn more about your unit you can right-click on them during a battle or while they’re on your bench (you can also right-click on the units of your enemies.)

Here you can see your unit’s synergies, health/mana, cost, rank, ability information (by hovering), and items (which you can also hover). Keep these in mind, for now, we’ll discuss them later.

TFT Right Click UnitRight-click on any champion unit for more information about them.

To understand what is happening in each round, take a look at the top of your screen. You can see the first carousel round icon, two minion fight icons, and a cube icon. These events will occur from left to right.

Before you fight, you have a set amount of time to prepare (as represented by the countdown). Right now you’ll only be able to change the position of your unit but you’ll have more options in a bit – for now, just drag your first unit from your bench and onto the board. (If you don’t do this, it will automatically be done for you)

TFT First MinionsIn this game, we grabbed a Ziggs with a Sparring Gloves

Once the countdown finishes, combat will begin and your unit will come alive to fight the minion bots. Since the minions are weak, your single unit should be able to kill them easily.

Mana and Abilities

While your unit fights, you may notice that their blue mana bar begins to fill up. Your champion will gain mana when they are dealing damage and taking damage.

TFT Hover Ability

Once their mana bar is full, they will cast their ability. Ziggs’ ability is Mini Inferno Bomb, which deals damage to enemies in a radius.

Note that not every champion has a casted ability. If you chose a unit like Warwick, this will not happen because they have passive abilities that are passive abilities.

Item Drops

When you fight bot-controlled minions and monsters, you have a chance to get an item drop. Outside of the carousel rounds, this is the only other time you can get items.

TFT Item Drop

In this image, we got an additional Sparring Gloves from defeating the minions.

Since minion rounds are easy, we don’t need to rush to combine and can instead, keep it on the bench to keep our options open.

Augments

TFT Hextech Augments

Augments were introduced to the game in Set 6, and have stuck around to today. These grant you bonus effects, whether they may be Gold related or Combat related. Furthermore, Set 9 introduces the new Legend system, which you can learn more about here.

Augments will be offered 3 times throughout the game, at these stages.

  • 1-4
  • 3-2
  • 4-2

Rounds 2 and 3: The Shop

After your first minion round, the game starts to really open up in terms of making decisions and constructing your team composition. Let’s take a look at the image below and break it down.

TFT Round 2-1 Set 6

At the beginning of round 2 and every round after until the game ends, you’ll be given five choices of champion units from the shop. All eight players in the match draw from a shared pool of finite pieces.

For each unit, you can see their cost, synergies, and a description of their ability if you hover them.

Above the five units you can see the amount of gold you have. Outside of buying units at the shop, you can also use gold to refresh, or “reroll” to another set of five champions for 2g or buy 4 experience points for 4g. You can also sell the units on your board or bench (you won’t always get back equal value for what you bought them for).

You can also choose to lock your shop (top right corner of the shop) so it doesn’t refresh at the beginning of the next round.

Some quick notes on these options:

  • Refresh: If you choose to reroll, it’s possible to see the same champions you had in a previous reroll. We’ll discuss rolling odds in a bit.
  • Buy XP: Your player level determines how many pieces you have on the board (if you’re level 3, you can have 3 unit pieces).
    • You will passively gain experience each round, but you can spend gold if you’re looking to increase your level and max number of units (up to 9 using experience).
    • You can see how many points to hit your next level and your current level at the left of the shop.
  • Lock: If you like the options given by a roll but don’t have enough gold to buy everything you need, consider locking your shop so you can buy when you get more gold for your next round.
  • Sell: You can sell your units by dragging them onto the shop or by clicking them and pressing E.

With so many options, it can be hard to understand when and why to buy champions. When you first start playing, you should be focused on trying to build toward your unit synergies.

Building Unit Synergies

Building a team around synergies is a core gameplay aspect of auto chess games like Teamfight Tactics. There are two types of synergies, class and origin, and every champion has at least one of each (some have more).

Remember when we right-clicked Ziggs earlier for more information? We saw that he was a Yordle and an Arcanist. Since then, we’ve bought different champions and now the synergies highlighted above show different traits we have on the board.

These represent the synergies that are currently on your board, and the number of units for a synergy’s ability to turn on.

TFT Set 6 Shop

You will see what synergies a unit will have in the shop as well. If you remove them from the board, the synergies will disappear from the left side of the screen.

Ziggs’ origin is Yordle. If we were able to find more Yordle units (another Ziggs wouldn’t count), such as Vex and Poppy, the trait will activate.

TFT Set 6 Yordle

Ziggs also has the Arcanist class. This offers you a different path with its own possibilities, advantages, and disadvantages.

TFT Arcanist Set 6

There are a ton of really cool synergies in TFT to learn more about them and their unique abilities, be sure to check out our wiki’s on origins and classes.

The way you learn about team comps depends on who you are as a player. If you’re someone who likes to learn on your own, feel free to experiment and learn through trial and error about which classes and origins work together well.

If you’re someone who wants to win now or immediately learn what’s good, check out our team comp recommendation guides to see team comp builds refined and tested by high-level players.

Ranking Up Units

Another core mechanic to keep in mind is that in TFT, you can combine identical units in order to make stronger ones – this is called ranking up (also called leveling up).

You can rank up your units by combining three copies for each tier:

  • Three 1 star units = One 2 star unit
  • Three 2 star units = One 3 star unit
  • This means that you need a total of nine 1 star units to get a 3 star unit.
  • Units you buy from the shop are 1 star unless they are Chosen (Set 4 mechanic).

In the image below, we have two 1 star Ziggs (indicated by the bronze color to the left of her health bar) on the bench and on the board, as well as one Ziggs available in the shop.

TFT Upgrade in Shop

By buying the Ziggs from the shop, all three will automatically combine into a 2 star Ziggs. When this transformation occurs, Ziggs grows in size and in power. The rank up will also alert everyone in the game in the chat log, so know that it’ll draw attention and keep an eye on the activity of other players.

TFT Upgraded Unit

In the image above, we can see that Ziggs now has a silver icon to the left of his health bar instead of bronze. By right-clicking to examine him, we can now see two stars instead of one.

If you hover an ability, you can see how it scales (which means gets stronger) with increasing rank. Now that Ziggs is 2 star, he will deal 425 damage with his ability instead of 325.

So on top of assembling team synergy, you’ll also want to continually upgrade your units as the game goes on. By the end of the game (if you survive until then), most of your team should be 2 star and even have a few 3 stars if you play your cards right.

As you level up, the pool of champions available to you and their probability of appearing changes (details shown in the table below). To keep it simple, if you’re hoping to get a 3 star unit, it’s wiser to hold off on leveling up because doing so may decrease the chances of it appearing.

TFT Roll chart

Likewise, if you’re looking to find a higher cost unit to complete the last part of your synergy, you may want to buy experience to increase your chances of it appearing. Just like a game of poker or a card game like Magic the Gathering, it’s all about playing the odds and doing what you can to understand and influence them.

Now that we know the basics of team building and which units to target, let’s get back to the game walkthrough.

Round 2-1 and Onwards: PvP Until Last Player Standing

After the three minion rounds end, Round 2-1 will begin and you’ll start to have player vs player fights. In the image below, we can see that we have three pvp fights before a carousel round, followed by two more pvp fights, and then lastly, a creep round.

This pattern will repeat until the end of the match when one player is standing (top 4 counts as a win). In the following sections, we’ll be discussing the overall concepts of a match instead of walking you through round by round.

TFT Round Indicator

PvP Rounds

During the pvp rounds, you’ll face a random opponent and pit your team of champions against theirs.

Depending on how badly the winning side wins, the losing side will take damage. There’s a specific formula for this but since this is a beginner’s guide, to simplify it, just think about it in terms of units that survive on the winning side.

If you have a really close battle that ends in a 1v1 between two final units, the losing side will take a small amount of damage. If the winning side wins by a landslide and has many surviving units, the loser will take a large amount of damage.

TFT Player Health

In the image above, in yellow, you can see the standings based on how much health players have. By clicking on their icon, you can also take a look at their board and bench.

You can also do this by clicking on the minimap at the bottom right, or by using the 1, 2, and 3 keys to rotate between player boards or return to your own (1 and 3 cycle, 2 returns you back home).

Carousel

As we mentioned earlier during the carousel section, player standings can be important because it determines the order in which players choose their pieces at the next carousel phase.

TFT 2-4 Carousel Set 6

All players begin the carousel phase locked and are released in reverse order starting with last place and ending with first place. This lets players who have fallen behind an opportunity to catch up since they are more likely to get the item and unit that they need most.

At this point, you may be asking, if players that are doing worse get better choices at carousel rounds, what’s the point of being ahead? Well, I’m glad you asked.

The Basics of Econ: Win Streaks, Lose Streaks, and Interest

In Teamfight Tactics, you’ll get passive income for free each round. The first few rounds, you’ll gain increasing gold every round starting from 2 gold up until a base of 5 gold per round. You get 2g round 2, 3g round 3, 4g round 4, and 5g round 5 and every round after.

You also get additional gold based on win/loss streaks and interest. If you are winning or losing consecutively, you will gain extra gold – here’s how it works:

  • 2-3 round streak = 1 extra gold per round
  • 4 round streak = 2 extra gold per round
  • 5+ round streak = 3 extra gold per round

This rewards players who have been doing well and throws some love to players who are having a rough time (there’s actually an advanced playstyle where you lose on purpose to get lose streak income and a good place in line for carousels, but that’s not for this article). You also get +1 gold for rounds that you win.

Depending on how much gold you have at the end of a round, you also get an interest bonus at the beginning of your next round. The amount of interest you get is related to every 10 gold you have up until 50:

  • 10g = +1g interest
  • 20g = +2g interest
  • 30g = +3g interest
  • 40g = +4g interest
  • 50g = +5g interest (the max)
  • Example: If you end the round with 34g, you will have an additional +3g from interest next round.

You can check how much gold you’re earning per round at any time by hovering your gold in shop (shown in red below). You can also get an idea of how much gold another player has by looking at the counters on the sides of the board (shown in yellow below).

TFT Econ indicators

Red: hover your gold in show to see your total income. Yellow: see how much interest each player is getting.

Each counter represents how much interest a player is receiving. The counters on the left represent your interest – since we have 50g in the bank, that means we’d get 5g in interest, hence the 5 counters. In a similar fashion, the opposing player has at least 40g, as shown by the four counters on the right. Unfortunately, you can’t tell the exact amount of gold your opponents have but at least this gives you a good idea.

To learn more, we strongly recommend checking out our TFT economy guide. We’ll cover these topics in more depth and give fundamental strategies regarding gold and econ management.

Positioning Basics

Managing your economy, buying units, and assembling your team are incredibly important but can all go to waste if you don’t position your units properly.

Making sure that your units are in the most optimal places possible will help you get the most value out of them and increase the consistency of their success in battle.

Here are general guidelines:

  • Since mana is generated from fighting and taking damage, you want your pieces in a position where they are actively dealing damage and taking damage to cast their abilities (without dying of course).
  • Try to have your units cast their ability at least once. If they’re dying before that, something is likely wrong.
  • Most team compositions are similar to League, you’ll have a beefy frontline that protects your squishy backline of damage dealers and utility units.
  • As the game goes on and you have a better idea of who you’ll be facing (since there are less players in the game), you’ll want to adjust your positioning accordingly.
  • To save time, you can swap units by dragging one unit onto another. They will automatically switch places whether they’re on the board or the bench.

To help these make more sense, we’ll cover the main fundamental of positioning.

Frontline and Backline

TFT Positioning

At the very basic level, you should position your units with a simple idea of frontline and backline.

Frontline Units: Frontline units usually have a defensive trait like Bruiser or Bodyguard that lets them absorb damage from enemy teams. These units will usually be melee units as well, so placing them in the front ensures that they won’t need to spend time walking up to hit enemies.

Backline Units: Backline units are simply the opposite. Backline units usually either provide damage, like Caitlyn, or utility abilities like healing and shields. These units usually have range that allows them to hit enemy frontline units without needing to move as much.

Without getting too specific, almost all comps follow this general idea. You can do other things like place more toward the right or left side, or even in the middle of the board. Some synergies also make it so you want to place your units close together or further apart.

To learn more about how to place your units and the fundamental concepts for doing so, check out our TFT positioning guide.

How to Combine Items and Who to Give Them To

Throughout the article, we’ve mentioned that you could get items from the carousel or monster rounds but we haven’t really covered what they’re for and how to use them. In this section, we’ll finally discuss how to best use them and why you should prioritize certain items over others – here are the main things you need to know:

  • Every unit can hold a maximum of three items.
  • Granting a unit an item is permanent. In order to move an item to another unit, you’ll have to sell the unit currently holding the item.
  • There are two types of items, basic and combined. Giving a unit two basic items will create a combined item.
  • In general, you’ll want to use items to augment the strengths of your team comp.

Items do everything from granting basic stats like health and attack speed to breaking the game by letting you exceed the max number of units. Having the right items on the right units will strongly increase your chances of winning, especially against teams that don’t use their items as well.

Similar to the positioning section, we’ll cover three different examples of items and who they’re best on:

Example #1: Guinsoo’s Rageblade on Tristana (empowering auto-attackers)

Guinsoo's Rageblade tft

Needlessly Large Rod + Recurve Bow = Guinsoo’s Rageblade

Guinsoo’s Rageblade grants its wearer 6% additional attack speed every time they attack, and it stacks infinitely. This means that they’ll attack faster and faster the longer a battle goes.

Example#2: Spear of Shojin on Viktor (cast abilities more often)

Spear of Shojin

BF Sword + Tear of the Goddess = Spear of Shojin

If it wasn’t apparent by now, abilities are game-changers in TFT. As we mentioned in the positioning section, getting one ultimate off is usually seen as a success. Spear of Shojin allows its wielder to cast their ability more often because they gain 8 mana per attack.

This is insane on champions that have really powerful ultimates, such as Viktor, whose ability damages many enemies with lasers. With Shojin, Viktor can potentially cast many times in a fight, assuming he stays alive long enough to do so.

Item Tier List and Recommendations for Every Champion

Items are one of the trickiest aspects of TFT to get the hang of. Since you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to try them all out to see how they feel and work. To make the process easier, however, we strongly recommend checking out our TFT items tool.

TFT Blue Buff Set 6

TFT Giant Slayer Set 6

We not only give you all the recipes for combined items, but we also tell you which champions each item is best for and rank them according to their tier. By following our recommendations there, we guarantee you’ll learn at a faster rate and see your success increase in your matches.

Frequently Asked Questions by Beginners

Lastly, we want to try to answer some questions we see often from beginners. As a disclaimer, know that Teamfight Tactics is a very situational game so we will do our best to give the most accurate answers possible, but things may be different for you based on the context and skill level of players in your matches.

If we didn’t cover your question in this Teamfight Tactics guide, let us know in the comments!

Should I spend gold early and try to see which units I can get the most of or should I save?

Definitely check out the guide we linked in the economy section above. We cover three main strategies that will help you with the decision making process related to spending to find upgrades or saving up.

In general, if you’re looking to maintain a win streak, it may be more worth it to look for upgrades to continue to snowball. Keep in mind, however, how realistic your odds are.

If you aren’t winning early on, it’s probably more beneficial to save up, as long as you aren’t getting completely destroyed and losing tons of HP. If you’re able to get a lose streak while staying healthy, you’ll be in a position to not only max interest but also be in a good spot at carousel rounds.

Which champions are strong when?

This is leaning towards a more advanced concept called “power spikes”, which if you’re a League player, you may be familiar with.

In a nutshell, it means that most pieces have a point in time where they are designed to be strongest, and times where they’re expected to not be good or fall off.

In general, attack speed is better early game, and raw burst is better later game. Single target abilities are better early game, AoE abilities are better late game.

I’ll give an example. In the early game, Caitlyn can be very strong – since there are less pieces on the board, she can execute an important enemy with her ability. In the late game, her ability is less likely to hit an enemy carry, making her ability less powerful.

Should I give my tanks items or my back line?

In general, offensive statted ones are better on your carries and damage dealers while survivability items are better for tanks. Utility items like Zeke’s Herald tend to crossover between both types of units.

Where do I position my units? Why do some people have all their units on the left side, others on the right, and others in the middle?

Positioning your own units depends on your team comp and the units you have, be sure to follow the guidelines we gave in the positioning section above.

In regards to other players, they are in different places because they are trying to find the ideal placements for their team against the rest of the competition.

Sometimes little tweaks here and there make a difference, and as the games wind down and the number of players decreases, positioning becomes even more important.

Does what I pick matter in the first carousel?

You can definitely still win with basically any unit as your first (especially since they’re low cost and not punishing to just sell and replace), but you can get a strong start if you manage to grab a contested item that is strong in the current meta.

Should I hold onto my items or use them ASAP?

In a nutshell, you want to try to get the ideal items on your ideal champions. If it’s the early to mid game and you still have time to find these, it may be better to hold on and wait instead of combining for weaker items.

If it’s the late game, however, and you’re close to dying but still have basic items sitting on your bench, it may be your best bet to fight for survival using the combined items they can create.

Remember that item combinations are permanent and there’s no way to get an item back without selling the unit holding it. Another good tip is to use a 1 cost unit to create a combined item on and then sell it, that way you don’t have to worry about accidentally combining with a basic item that your carry was holding onto.

Easy Street Fighter 6 Characters for Beginners (Top 5)

This Top 5 list covers the easy Street Fighter 6 characters that we recommend most for beginners.

Note that this is meant more for players who are either starting with Classic or want to make the jump from Modern to Classic.

The reason for this is that the Modern controls are so simple, that you can get by with any characters.

Our list factors in simplicity of gameplan, versatility, and offers different options for playstyle preferences.

Looking for the BEST characters? Check out our Street Fighter 6 tier list.

1. Ryu / Ken

ryu sf6 profileken sf6 profile

Ryu and Ken are the OGs of Street Fighter, so if you want to learn the core fundamentals of the game, they are a great place to start.

Since they have the same master lorewise, they have very similar move sets with slight variations that give them their own unique flairs.

If you like Hadoukens and projectile play, you may like Ryu. He has a projectile Super in Shinku Hadoken as well as Denjin Charge which lets him empower his fireballs.

Although Ryu can definitely be aggressive, it’s where the fiery Ken thrives. Instead of being able to empower his Hadoukens, Ken has abilities like Quick Dash and Dragon Lash Kick that allow him to reliably get on top of his opponent.

With either choice, you’ll have a character that is well-rounded, easy to learn, and super intuitive for beginners.

2. Luke

luke sf6 profile

While Ryu and Ken are the traditional representatives of the franchise, Luke is the face of Street Fighter 6.

Similar to Ryu and Ken, he has a wide range of versatile tools for any situation but he is just a tad bit harder since his abilities have a bit more variation.

For example, his Flash Knuckle offers three variations depending on if you choose the Light, Medium, or Heavy option.

So although he is still a straightforward and beginner-friendly character, he does offer some more choices than his older counterparts.

3. Marisa

marisa sf 6 profile

If you want to be a massive juggernaut who doesn’t care about using projectiles, consider Marisa.

She’s a new addition to the Street Fighter cast and offers a playstyle that makes every hit count.

With Marisa, you can power through many attacks of your opponents and punish them with powerful blows that offer shocking damage output.

All of her inputs are simple but effective and the only real twist she has that you need to think about is her Scutum ability that rewards you for being able to counter your opponents.

Overall, she keeps things simple and is a great choice for players that want to ignore using projectiles themselves and focus on dealing out massive pain up[ close and personal.

4. Guile

guile sf6 profile

While the rest of our recommendations have had straightforward inputs so far, “charge characters” like Guile can be daunting for a beginner to learn.

The way it works is that you have to hold a direction before swinging the other way to execute the ability. It takes some getting used to but you get used to it with some good ol’ fashion practice.

So why is Guile on our list? Well, he’s the easiest of the charge characters if you want to dip your toes into that style of play.

This is because Guile uses a no-nonsense gameplan of wearing down his opponents with projectiles like Sonic Boom and Sonic Blade while having a powerful “get away from me” ability in Somersault Kick.

So overall, Guile gives you a straightforward way to learn how to execute charge commands without a complicated gameplay loop.

5. Manon

manon sf6 profile

If you want to get a feel for playing a grappler without committing super hard to playing someone like Zangief, Manon is a great beginner choice.

First off, she barely has as many Special commands as the rest of the cast! So she offers a lot less mental burden in remembering her abilities.

Second, while she does have command grabs, the rest of her kit is very versatile and simple to execute.

Lastly, her Medals system gives you the option to go for more command grabs instead of longer combos since it offers guaranteed easy damage that build throughout the rest of the game.

So whereas, another character might need to capitalize on a punish with a longer combo, Manon can just go for the Manège Doré.
